Melby is a part of the village of Sandness, which contains Melby Pier, the Aald Haa, Melby House, St. Margaret's Kirk, the former shop and post office and two 'streets' of houses, 'da aest street' and 'da wast street'. There are also two beaches, da Haa beach and the larger Melby Beach, to which the freshwater Melby Loch drains. Nearer to Huxter, on the coast, lie the Melby Fish Beds. Melby House and the Aald Haa were both once the dwelling of the lairds of Melby, the most notable of those being Dr. R.T.C Scott of Melby. Melby was the childhood home of the writer Robert Alan Jamieson.
