Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Mossy Hill, HU396200, (Twarri Field on OS Maps) in the south Shetland Mainland, was the site of a Nato military base which formed part of the 'Ace High' network of Forward Scatter stations, which covered an area from Norway to Turkey.
The base, under the command of the Royal Corp of Signals, operated a 'Line of Sight' link to Collafirth Hill, and 'Troposhperic Scatter' links to Norway and Mormond Hill near Fraserburgh. While operational the site was under the command of a WO1 Foreman of Signals, with 6 technicians. They were supported by 6 engineering staff supplied by the Public Services Agency, and the site was protected by a sergeant an 6 constables from the Ministry of Defence Police.
Administrative control and staff amenities, for the Mossy Hill site, was at the Maybury complex, in Virkie.
The Mossy Hill site was closed down in 19??. The large Tropospheric Scatter dishes, which had become a well known landmark, have now been removed.
