Muckle Roe (Old Norse : Rauðey mikla The big red island ), is joined to the Shetland Mainland by a bridge over Roe Sound and has a population of around 100 people.
Its highest point is South Ward at almost 200 metres. The island is approx 3 miles in diameter, and an ancient dormant volcano, hence the nickname: "the red rock".
On the north west side of the island are the two small sheltered voes North Ham and South Ham. South of North Ham is a small lake called Town Loch which has a ruined croft house on its side.
The Island wrecked at Roda Geo at the north end of the isle in January 1703, and the Petrel wrecked on the isle on September 14th 1897.
