North Roe is the most northerly village on the Shetland Mainland.
It was the childhood home of the poet and writer James Inkster, who is recorded by Dr. Jakob Jakobsen as a key source for his dictionary of Shetland Norn and the author William A. S. Burgess, who was married to Inkster's wife's sister, lived at the South Haa.
In the 20th C. it was the birthplace of the broadcaster and cultural activist Mary Blance.
North Roe is also the location of Da Big Bannock, an annual charity fundraising event.
