Papa Little is the second biggest of the three "Papa islands" in Shetland being roughly fourtimes bigger than Papa west of Scalloway and the "big Papa island", Papa Stour being again roughly fourtimes bigger than Papa Little.
The reason why this island has the "Papa" in its name is a bit obscure because there seem to be no archaeological relics or other evidence of industrial use prior to 1700 but the destinction as "Papa Little" against "Papa Stour" might point to a long lasting relationship between the two islands.
It lies at the east end of Swarbacks Minn separated from West Mainland Shetland by The Rona to the south east and the Sound of Houbansetter to the east of the island. Neighbouring Muckle Roe is less than 500m to the northwest.
The island had a last recorded population of 11 inhabitants in 1841 but was abandoned later in the 1840s.
