Atrocious spelling ? ;-)

I think a spellchecker would be very useful many times ;-), I know I should have used that too... ;-), Cheers--Oddrun 13:41, 18 October 2007 (MDT)

To be fair to young people, and Norwegians ;-), the teaching of spelling in the education system has been sadly lacking for the last 40 years.
I remember well the arguments I had with teachers, who gave my elder kids high marks for their writing, while ignoring spelling, because they said, "It was phonetically correct". That statement always made my blood boil..
I use a spell checker all the time, but that in itself creates a whole heap of problems because it is full of US spelling cock-ups, such as 'center', 'realize', etc.
Afraid a dictionary on the computer desk is the only solution, until some nice person invents a UK spell checker,,,, or is there such a thing available already? I would certainly buy one, it would save me hours correcting my own cock-ups. :-))))

Yeah well some spellings make more sense to the younger folks now for sure, mainly from the simplified (and in my opinion, better dictionary)

  • Gray instead of Grey, makes a lot more sense
  • Center instead of Centre (makes much more sense to go with the pronounciation) JAStewart 03:18, 19 October 2007 (MDT)
100% agree wi dee James, da English language is a lok o shite, we wid be far better spellin tings da wye dey soond, laek i da Shetland dialect :-)
Meybe we cud do hit da Norskie wye, whaur centre in spelles senter, an soonds da sam :-))))
As lang as we dunna hae ta start oosin text spell, laek L8R for later; an CU for see you ;-)
Although these last 2 days I have had the best possible fun with language. I convinced one of my Norwegian friends at work that "Foo's dy pillie" was a standard Shetland greeting. He has tried it on lots of folk... Should have seen his face when I told him what he had been asking them :-))))))
PS. just to show another cock-up in the language,, it's pronunciation, not pronounciation. ;-)
None of us will ever get spelling or grammar right, that's why we all rely on each other to correct our cock-ups.;-)
