The Swedish vessel Samba had been drifting for several days with engine failure before she was wrecked on the Ness of Sound on 28th December 1956. All the crew were saved. Coxwain John Sales of the Lerwick Lifeboat was awarded a bronze medal for his gallant actions in the rescue.
