Sandlodge is possibly from the 17th century. It was long used by the Bruces of Sumburgh as a "half-way-house" between their different properties. The house has been extended and altered up through the years, the rear wing is the oldest.
In 1789 Alexander Creighton of Tynemouth and London discovered copper ore near Sandlodge, and a copper mine was opened soon after. The mine was flooded and closed in 1808. In 1872 it was reopened by John Walker from Edinburgh. It was run by different owners, closed and reopened until it's final closing in 1929.
