The Sands of Mail, HU430279, are at the south end of the village of Cunningsburgh on the east side of the south Shetland Mainland.
The sand is easilly accessed from the main A970, Lerwick to Sumburgh road, which runs past the west end of the sand, where the Burn of Mail enters the sea.
The ground rises steeply to the west of the sand, to a height of 247m at the top of Hoo Field.
