Shetland Heat Energy & Power Ltd. is the company set up to run the Lerwick District Heating Scheme.
The scheme which pipes hot water around Lerwick in underground insulated pipes, to heat houses and businesses, became operational in November 1998 with heat provided by oil fired boilers, until November 1999 when the 7MW Waste to Energy Incinerator came online and the oil boilers reverted to their intended purpose of back-up to the incinerator.
In 2006 a 15MWh storage tank was added to the system which stores spare heat during the night and lessens the need for the back-up boilers at peak load times.
The scheme now provides heat for over 700 properties in Lerwick, including the hospital, schools, shops, and factories, as well as private houses.
New extensions to the system are being added all the time and new sources of heat to cope with future expansion are always being sought.
