Shetland Jewellery is a jewellery manufacturer, shop, and visitor centre, located in Weisdale.

Shetland Jewellery (at that time known as Shetland Silvercraft) was founded by Jack Rae in Weisdale, in 1953. Jack arrived in Shetland in 1945 to take up a post of lay preacher in the Island of Foula , moving to Weisdale in 1949. Originally he trained and worked as a jeweller in Edinburgh before the second world war, and looked for something different after his job as an inspector in a munitions factory ended near the end of the war.

Jack took on a local lad Jim Moncrieff as an apprentice in 1953, and Jim remained with the company until his retirement in 2001. The company moved to ite present premises in 1972 and a major extension was added in 2003. The company at present employs 11 people full and part time, and operates under the management of Jack Rae’s son Kenneth.

Jack Rae’s original and classic designs were inspired by Scandinavian mythology, local wildlife and archaeology. The range has expanded considerably, together with the skills of the work force. Rings in gold, silver and platinum form an important part of the current production. Diamond setting and enamelling are important skills which have been added to add diversification to the already very large range.
