- restin shair = wooden chair with back and arms
- rig = (n)field, backbone. (v) to dress.
- rigga rendal = (n) the equivalent to the Scottish run-rig

- rit = (n) a type of sheep mark cut on the ears
- ritty bory = woman of ill repute
- rivlin = shoe, made of rough leather
- roo = (v) to remove the fleece of the Shetland sheep by pulling (combing) as opposed to shearing
- rooderie = rough
- rooderie baa = rock in sea covered with barnacles
- röst = (n) a dangerous tidal stream (also roost)
- rummle = rumble
- rumse = rummage, search
- runnick = trench for dung in byre
