The pictures on this page are from the 1st stage of the build, in date order. Laying the keel, fixing the stem and stern post, and preparing to fit the first boards, called the Boddam Runners.
A lot of care is taken at this stage to get everything aligned correctly, as any mistakes at this stage will cause problems throughout the build.
Copying something which was built over 100 years ago, is no easy task. And although many of the building techniques are standard to any clinker built vessel, in this case a lot of thought is given to the use of materials, such as Archangel Tar, which would have been used in the original building of Sixareens.

6th February

Oak keel, 20' 2" long, with hog attached lying on starboard side, with stern post and joining skarfs cut.
Keel and hog. Part of hog is cut away to allow the first plank to be attached with copper nails and roves. At each end, the plank will be nailed directly into the hog.
Robbie chisels out rebate in stem to receive the ends of the planks.
The rebate allows the plank ends to fit flush in the stem as in this example of a smaller boat also being built in the boatshed.

7th February

Bow, keel and stern post assembled and erected. A string is tied from bow to stern post and plumbobs are hung to check assembly is true.
Stern post and keel skarfed and fixed.

Jack holds the heavy hammer on the other side.
Plumbob on centre line of keel which is now firmly fixed to the floor via heavy wood blocks and ready for the next stage.
More braces for the bow.
More support for the stem.
Robbie checks the stem for movement and watches the plumbob.
More supports for the stem and stern are fixed to the shed floor and roof beams.

8th February

Temporary guides on the keel, to ensure the correct angle and degree of twist for the first plank on each side.
The four frames (top left) which will dictate the final shape of the hull, will be fixed to the guides.

11th February

From a template, the outline of the first board is marked on the larch plank.
Jack cuts the board from the plank.
The board is passed several times through the thicknesser.
Gradually reducing the thickness to the desired 3/4" (19mm).
Robbie planes the bevelled edge on the board.
After several trial fittings and adjustments, the board is just right.
Robbie twists a test piece and decides one hour in the steambox is about right.
With the first board now in the steambox, Jack blocks off the end.

12th February

The first board is partly nailed and the matching board on the starboard side is tried for size and curvature.

The nails holding the first board stick through the cutaway section of the hog.
Half of the skarf joint is cut on the end of the first board.
The first rove is punched on to the protruding nail in the hog.
The excess length is cut off.
Nail tip is clinked on the rove, repeated along the hog.
The degree of twist in the board could not be achieved without the steambox.
Board meets sternpost. At the interface is a layer of syon (a cloth strip) and Archangel tar, in the traditional manner.

13th February
