Smyril Line
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
The Smyril Line was formed in 1982, by Mr O. Hammer, J. Davastou, and A Joensen. After raising sufficient capital they purchased the second hand ferry "Gustav Wasa", which had been built in 1973, and renamed her Norröna. In June 1983 the Norröna started operating on a route previously operated by a vessel called Smyril.
The current Norröna came into service in 2003 and operated on the Faeroe, Shetland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland service until recently when it was decided to bypass Shetland as it was not financially viable. A limited number of visits to Shetland will take place during summer 2007, but the Shetland - Norway route is not included.
