The Spiggie Loch is a Nature Reserve owned by the RSPB and is one of Shetland's popular trout fishing lochs. To fish on the Spiggie Loch a permit must be obtained from the Shetland Anglers Association. These permits cost £20, and can be obtained from the Rod and Line shop in Harbour Street, Lerwick, or from The Spiggie Hotel.

A useful guide to the bird life which may be seen around the area can be seen on the RSPB hut at the North end of the loch. Opposite the hut is a track which leads across the sand dunes to Scousburgh Sand.
