The Swan was a fishing boat launched from Freefield Docks in Lerwick on the 3rd May 1900. The Swan continued to fish off Shetland until the 1950's when she was retired. In 1960 she was towed from Shetland to Grimbsy and was converted into a houseboat.

After several different owners she ended up in Hartlepool in 1982, where she was left neglected. Keith Parkes, a local Hartlepool businessman bought The Swan in 1989 with the intention of fixing her up and sailing her back to Shetland. A lack of time caused him to abandon his plans and the Swan went up for sale.

Shetland man Tom Moncrieff and his son Jimmy (James) campaigned to get The Swan back into Shetland ownership. The Swan Trust was created, money was raised and The Swan was purchased by the trust.

On the 11th May 1996, after a complete refurbishment, The Swan was relaunched in Lerwick harbour.
