What is the source for the first paragraph here? There is a document in the Bremen Archives of 1557, where Cord Hemelingk's crew were said to travel by 'lighter' at night from 'Laeszfoerde' (almost certainly Laxfirth in Tingwall, an important base for German merchants) to Whalsay - and then assaulted him. Is there really a document about the building of Cord's booth thirty years previously? Brian 16:12, 21 February 2008 (MST)

>>>Is there really ...<<<
Yes it is ... or more correct: it was ... at least some 20 Years or so ago, when I saw it for the last time ... ;-) ... being not sure about the exact spelling of the name (no copying allowed) ... despite the spelling: what's "easy rowing distance" from Whalsay for a trained sailor? Dury Voe or Tingwall??? Islandhopper 16:59, 21 February 2008 (MST)

I think you have misread 1557 for 1527, and assumed that the reference to CH's booth in the 1557 case refers to the building of it. The 1557 case about CH is the only place where these details are preserved. The reason I think Laxfirth in Tingwall is meant is (a) because the document says so; and (b) Laxfirth was the Shetland base par excellence for German merchants. If Dury Voe had been meant, it would have been specified. Brian 00:28, 22 February 2008 (MST)
