Talk:Anderson High School
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Not being an academic person I can't do anything with this page. But, it is crying out for a bit of detail, particularly the history of the Institute, from its founding until it became the AHS.
Anybody got any input????

Opened in 1862, can't find the template to enter this info ? Agree it needs a lot of detail

- We must have somebody here who attended the AHS, and actually learned something... Not me I'm afraid. I slept through most classes. ;-)
I believe Exisle would be the man for this job. Unless of course Ghostrider will admit to being more educated than he says he is ;-)

- Nah, Ghostrider kens very little aboot the place I'm afraid, at least as far as history goes anyway. I will admit to being there, but only for a very short time, most of my time as an AHS pupil was spent at the Central.
- The first round of extensions I was always told were built in the 60's, that added the current entrance, offices, main hall, dining hall, gym hall and numerous classrooms in the arm that runs north behind the car park/road/Bruce Hostel. The second round of extensions were built in the mid 70's, the horrible looking three, three storey blocks on the south side. I don't know when it became a 6 year comprehensive, it was one before the final extensions of the '70's were built anyway, and the Central was used, particularly the Navigation and Technical rooms, as an integral part of the AHS right up until those final 70's extensions were built. The 70's extensions opened after the summer of '76, but before the summer of '78. That's about all I can offer on the place.
- [Edit] Just took a closer look at the picture on the page. Disregard the mention of the 70's extensions being 'final', they were when I last saw the place, but there's about twice the amount of buildings on that site now. I suppose that shows how long it is since I was near the place last, never had the need, or interest to since I left....

When I was there, the "extensions" were ex-army huts, one at the back and about six at the front. Heating in the huts was by bogie stoves (sometimes red-hot), the walls were coming away from the floor and you could see out all along the sides. In the winters, snow blew in along the skirting boards. We were not an academic bunch, as in later years, for their sins, four of the class ended up as S.I.C. councillors.
