Started work of following things:

  • factsheet about the ship according to marine accident investigation branch MIAB
  • map "Brae approaching Shetland" based on marine accident investigation branch MIAB
  • maps on oil spill and moves of the oil

Uploaded three pictures, more to come. No descriptions added yet - very weary and bedtime!! My thanks to Heimdal for copying them from dusty negatives. Peter

Update. The second two pictures seem to be part of a sequence. Behind the big wave is another vessel possibly the 'Sirus'?? Maybe they could be used to demonstrate the ferocious force of the storm. They were taken as it passed the two small islands west of the mainland (north of Horse Island) Having to edit out a lot of heavy dust marks from each picture so may take a while to get them all done. About to upload a picture of the bows taken 4-months later. Peter

Very good looking page!!!
Keep on like that!!
Good wishes from Aberdeeen :-) ,!! Oddrun 04:33, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

pics

tried to work on ... but: a) do you have them in a bigger size? (not neccessarily to publish them bigger, but to work on them); b) do you have them in JPG-format? editing photographs as GIFs reduces the chances to work on them unneccessarily! Great shots and it would be a loss not to publish them in the best quality that's possible. Islandhopper 04:53, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

  • They were originally JPG-format but too big so I made them smaller. Can send you the big JPG-format pictures direct via email? Then you can choose which ones to use. There is two, or maybe more for the sequence but all are dusty and must clean them up first. Also pictures of Dakota A/C spraying the oil after the spill. Let me know if I can send direct. Peter

Hi Peter, if you let me know the names of the pics, I can reduce them to 640x480 jpgs and send them to you as e-mail attachments, might even dust them off ;-) Heimdal 07:59, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

If you want, you may send them to Wolfgang.Schlick(AT)schottlandportal.de. But see to it that the whole attachment (either summery of all individual JPGs or a zip-file including several pics) is not bigger than 10MB. Larger attachments will be rejected by our mail server. Islandhopper 08:06, 31 March 2007 (MDT)
  • I'll send you a few of the best ones at a time. Only one picture is 2.75mb the rest are smaller. Peter

That's after a quick cleaning. Could be done better but for a first attempt not bad for my skills ... ;-) Islandhopper 15:57, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

Started work on the second (left) pic after upload of the first - so it takes roughly 30 minutes ... (had to roll a ciggy in between) ;-) Tested different methods applied.

It's worth any job!!! Islandhopper 16:31, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

  • Just had a look at the Braer pages. Everythings looking good! I used MS Paint to copy a small square very close to the blemish, then pasted it over the top. Blends in very nicely.

Will the sequence or the banner be any good? I'm leaving you to fill up the pages. Hope that's ok? You are better at it then I am. Peter

Was WasDustyBeforeClearing
Was WasDustyBeforeClearing

I use Jasc PaintShopPro for the clearings. Tools: Noise reduction, spot clearing, Gauss unsharpening (skys only) and stamped the rest with neighbouring pixels but only with 68% covering; where the structures were unsharp anyway I've reduced sharpness only. All that before resizeing the pics.

As to the banner: Would be a nice thing when featuring the Braer site on mainpage (see seperate mail). Show it Gary, please. ;-) Islandhopper 17:46, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

oilspill

I have basical graphs for January 6th, 9th, 15th and 21st from the site that's linked in the stub. January 12th and 18th may be taken from press material I have ... and then we do a nice animated GIF for all the days and show the oil floating around ... ;-) Ideas? Islandhopper 17:55, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

additional stuff

I know that the Quendale mill has a lot of photographic material documenting the probs of crofters even from the east coast of Dunrossness who had to plough over their fields and gardens due to the oil spread. Has anyone access to such material??? Islandhopper 18:28, 31 March 2007 (MDT)

Can anyone remember the amount paid out from the pollution fund as a sweetner to the locals,, I seem to remember getting about £400, whereas my parents who were further away but in a supposedly more sensitive are received twice as much. could be worth a mention in this article.
Also mention could be made of the compensation fund in relation to claims from crofters, house owners, etc... must be a lot of info on that available..
I'll think more when I sober up from Aberdeen,, HIC!!, HIC!!, ;-)
Must go buy Oddrun another beer,, ;-).. HIC!!
Robbie 08:29, 1 April 2007 (MDT)

PS. Oddrun says she is too drunk to post anything other than HIC!! HIC!! ;-),,
Robbie 08:31, 1 April 2007 (MDT)

It's beginning to take shape. I put an eyewitness account on the main page Hope it fits in somewhere. We got £800 compensation. Spent my half towards a new medium format camera. Those first Braer pictures...there's a sequence of about 7 can be used. Putting them in a row demonstrates the rough sea prevailing - big waves blotting out the accompanying tug etc. (There's a tug behind that big wave in the picture above 'WasWasDustyBeforeClearing') Could it be done as a slide-show? There's 140 pictures by the way! So there should be more than enough to choose from later in the article if needed. Does anyone know the names of the two vessels on the scene with the Braer? One was the 'Star Sirius', but don't know the name of the other. Peter

Sorted a bit ... "best first" ;-)
Peter, could you send me one or two of the drifting Braer in full size ... cleared the blue haze due to pic age from the "4 months later" and the black spots in it. upload later today. Islandhopper 10:33, 1 April 2007 (MDT)
  • Will send some bigger pictures as soon as I can. Any particular pictures you have seen so far? If so, what are the numbers?

I can call in to see Heimdal tomorrow with the negatives, maybe get several. Should be with you about Tuesday. Peter

Just a thought guys,, but would it look better to put the factsheet at the bottom of the article.?? Think it would look better because the article is very interesting but that factsheet sort off gets in the way... Thinking aloud again :-))
Robbie 05:02, 2 April 2007 (MDT)

Moin, Robbie ... We are just collecting material. Site is far from being finished ... ;-) May be we create a series of pages similar to the town hall stuff later. May be that on the original "Shetland wreck page" only the first line and the factsheet will survive while all the other things go to a new cat "Braer Disaster" ... No idea what will be gathered within a weeks time ... ;-) By the way: From one of Peter's pics I could isolate the Star Sirius at stand by ... pics of the two fisherboats available which caught the first radar signals of the Braer and were on stand by as well - one is in the pics as well but unpossible to isolate and/or identify ... How is Oddrun??? :-) Islandhopper 05:14, 2 April 2007 (MDT)

  • Did a suggested banner for the top of the page...Any comments??? Text can be re-hashed etc.

Identification

Can someone identify the fishing vessel on the right in the last two pics? Is it the Philorth or the Treasure??? Islandhopper 16:55, 2 April 2007 (MDT)

  • Some of those pictures are looking really good. The pages will probably be the most comprehensive there is.

No idea which fishing boat it was. Heimdal does not know either. It will be recorded somewhere. Shetland Times? I have some more pictures to send you but they are too big - between 11mb and 20mb!!!. I found the way to make them smaller to about 2mb. Too late to let Heimdal know - I already asked him to do them again! The picture 'Four months later' It's the same as the banner. I have a close-up and better one. Maybe change them over later. Peter

Now he tells me !!! I should have looked here earlier !! Pics sent Heimdal 18:05, 2 April 2007 (MDT)

with Peter's OK

I have placed one of the shots here doing a little promo for Shetlopedia ... :-D Islandhopper 18:14, 2 April 2007 (MDT)

Just had this reply from one of my e-mails

>The purser was the 'Philorth' of Peterhead one of the Taits' boats. >The >skipper was Andrew Tait and I spoke to him afterwards about the >grounding. >He said that at no time while standing by the Braer could the Master >have >put anyone forward to do anything because of the amount of water >that was >going across the deck of the vessel. For a Tait to say that it must >have >been pretty awesome! > That was me Heimdal 18:18, 2 April 2007 (MDT)

  • Many thanks Heimdal. Couple of pictures show water pouring off the Braer decks. Dosn't surprise me nobody could go forward. Maybe write all this in to the story. Sorry about the pics. It was late before I, (sort of) worked it out. A very long-winded juggling process - three picture programs on two computers and two format changes!!!. There must be an easier way? Not even sure what I did?

I'll work at it later.
Peter

What's that???

Image:Xtra6h BraerDrifting What.jpg
It is on the xtra6h.jpg-scan
Peter, will you have a look at the neg and please tell me what this structure is??? Does not look like a scratch or something like that! Shall I leave it or take it out??? Islandhopper 04:40, 4 April 2007 (MDT)

I got it: There was something like aan attice mast on the back. Try to get it fixed somehow ... ;-) I cut it out from a different pic and will mount it back to the deck :-) Islandhopper 05:10, 4 April 2007 (MDT)

  • No idea what it is/was. Heimdal, could you look at the neg? the one with the white dot at the side? Whatever it is, it looked like part of the superstructure/mast. It could be my coffee???
    Peter
  • Cracked it! That should be there! It's the picture angle. The main mast has lined up with another lattice mast behind and to one side. Compare the two. Peter

Yes, I agree Heimdal 12:03, 4 April 2007 (MDT)

  • The Braer seems to have lost one of its masts on the main page now?
    Peter
I sent her to the dry dock, to get the mast repaired ;-) but first I have to bring my mum to the hospital - she fell down the stairs ... :-( Islandhopper 13:09, 4 April 2007 (MDT)
  • Changing tack slightly, I put a picture of the Bressay ferry 'Grima' on the Bressay page. Hope this is ok. There's a blank space at the bottom of the page now so it needs moving. (or delete it if not suitable) Peter

further proceedings

placed a suggestion in the forum (may be other interested viewers); please look and discuss there ... Islandhopper 17:04, 5 April 2007 (MDT)

THX Heimdal

... for all the corrections so far. I'm just writing down ideas and information I found worthy to be mentioned trying to define "good looking" and understandable sections without any respect to formal corrections up to now. It's a completely new subject to me with a lot of unknown/unfamiliar vocabulary etc pp. But as I see: I'm still making the same mistakes I did when at school ... ;-) Islandhopper 16:20, 7 April 2007 (MDT)

"I'm still making the same mistakes I did when at school ..." Aren't we all !! I'm trying to not interfere too much with the description, but trying also to make it a bit more colloquial English.

Hope your mother is recovering from her fall, and no damage done. Heimdal 17:05, 7 April 2007 (MDT)

Heimdal, I do appreciate it and I think that's the best way wiki-work can go. As to my mum: She first took six steps forward, then - surprise - 6 steps backward. She is looking like a blue unicorn and has a broken clavicle, but the doctors just wondered ... ;-) Well, born after WWI and grown up on turnips, survyving WWII and getting a baby on the run from Eastern Prussia to Saxonia ... it's somehow a different race ... ;-) Islandhopper 17:25, 7 April 2007 (MDT)

THX, Heimdal, for the add about the pics. I knew something was forgotten but didn't remember "what" ... ;-) Islandhopper 17:08, 30 November 2007 (MST)
