RSPB Reserve

>>>Lumbister is an RSPB bird reserve ...<<<

That's what I've always thought, too, and consequently published in my tourist guide ... ;-)

BUT: I don't find no proof for that ... East Mires and Lumbister are a SAC and marked as such on the SNH map of Designated Nature Conservation Areas in Shetlan (covering just the area which I had understood as being the RSPB-Reserve) but it is not mentioned as a bird reserve neither on the Nature-Shetland nor on the RSPB website ... and now looking at the actual OS maps we can see that the area has lost the bird signature indicating a bird reserve which used to be there for decades ...:-(

Any idea about what's the real status??? Islandhopper 02:46, 1 October 2007 (MDT)

Hazel, any ideas???

Blue is what I did know as the Lumbister RSPB Reserve and what is still shown on the Defra MAGIC website, but only there. Red is the special area of conversation according to SNH which for some unknown reason would not include the gorge and the lower Dale of Lumbister.

The actual RSPB website has for Shetland only the reserves on Fetlar and Mousa and the reserves at Spiggie and Sumburgh; see here Islandhopper 03:43, 1 October 2007 (MDT)

I think we have to figure it out with a local RSPB official. RSPB offers on their properties pages Kirkabister farm house ... located within the Black Park section of the RSPB Yell nature reserve ... but neither the Black Park section nor any other section of or the RSPB Yell NR itself are mentioned or described by RSPB ... It looks like that they somehow got mixed up with their own terminology because all other RSPB Nature Reserves are in addition described as RSPB Bird Reserves except Yell in total or in its parts as Lumbister or Black Park ... :-))) Islandhopper 08:08, 1 October 2007 (MDT)
