Talk:Fred Irvine
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Given the nature of his work, I'm not sure if he belongs in the authors category, an artist's one, or in both. Any thoughts?
Also, can anyone confirm that the following is the same person?
"Magnus Frederick Francis Irvine, born at 'The Knoll', Lerwick. January 19th 1890".
Thanks.

- I was thinking about that. I would imagine Artists would be a safe bet. Not sure about Authors. Maybe Es-Isle will have an idea.

Can't positively confirm it, but from my memory of Fred the age would be right and the address. MFFI Irvine's father died at 'Knowe of Leog' in 1928. 'Knowe' is the house where Dennis Coutts now lives and was certainly where Fred lived.

To the general question of where to put him, I'd say both - text and illustrations are both his in the books I have .... re the biog, might get confirmation at the bayanne site? Ex-Isle
- According to the forword of the 2nd edition of the Pictures from ... the year of the first publication should read 1955. Islandhopper 05:08, 9 July 2007 (MDT)
The NLS catalogue has it as 1955 too ... Ex-isle 06:17, 9 July 2007 (MDT)
- The Shetland Times did print runs in 1975 and 1988 as far as I'm aware. The copy I have is from the 1975 print run, and has a different cover to the one shown for the 1988 version. Unfortunately I don't have my '75 copy to hand at the moment to check whether it makes mention that it was a reprint or revised editon of an earlier version, but it's highly possible, given that most of the author's other work appears in the 1950's.

- Here's the NLS link -

- This is in danger of becoming complicated....The NLS site is giving first publication in 1955 by an unknown publisher, a 2nd Edition published by the Times in 1969, and a 3rd edition also by them in 1974. The 1988 edition they seem less clear on, giving it as a reprint by the Times of the 1955 version, which itself, possibly may have been a Times publication.
- I wonder if it might not be best to keep the entry simple by putting something like "First published in 1955 and reprinted by The Shetland Times in 1969, 1974 and 1988", until it's at least more clear which were actual revised editions and which were reprints?

As a copyright library the NLS should be right, but of course mistakes can happen anywhere.
The only way to be sure is for me to go there, order them up, and look inside 'da brods' :)

The note in the 1988 edition says: In 1955, in response to numerous requests this booklet of drawings and articles by Fred Irvine from The Shetland Times was produced. It has been of print for some time and this edition is again in response to local demand. No word about reprint, additions, revised edition etc. - Islandhopper 07:43, 9 July 2007 (MDT)
My copy has the preface dated September 1969, and was printed by the Shetland Times.Heimdal 09:09, 9 July 2007 (MDT)
