@ Robbie,

I've just noticed this line, and am having trouble making sense on it.

"It was belived that the person on watch had mistaken the Sumburgh Head light, for the Fair Isle light, and steamed east thinking that they were in the Fair Isle channel."

Is that not the wrong way around? If she was Grangemouth - Lerwick and mistook Sumburgh for Fair Isle, and steamed east so that they could keep watch for the Sumburgh light, she'd have come to no harm, they'd have been clear of land and just ended up a sicht nearer Norway than they planned to be. If they mistook Fair Isle for Sumburgh though, and set a course for Lerwick accordingly, they'd have very likely ended up someplace around where they did, their mistake was not to steam east far enough soon enough.

Or am I just spaekin hellery here, and should go and sleep a while....

I can't remember where that snippet of info came from, I think it was a booklet about wrecks that fedder had. I'd read it a few times before I made that page. For some reason they were to the west of Fair Isle, and looking for the Fair Isle channel. I did wonder if possibly they had been into Orkney for something, but don't know if that makes sense either.
If they were to the west of Fair Isle by accident, it makes their navigational skills a complete joke in the first place. ;-)
