Robbie, shouldn't we add a sentence explaining that "depending on time and kind of fish" the expression "fish curing station" covered other kinds of fishprocessing as well. That is to say that at the high time of the last herring boom "fish curing station" was applied for a station where herrings which had not been processed on the boats were landed an processed: gutted, cleaned, salted and packed into barrels ... as well as large places where the barrels were stored waiting for further transport. I am not sure about the situation in Shetland but from my Orkney background I know, that existed both permanent stations (incl. little settlements as in Ortie/Sanday or Whitehall/Stronsay) in contrast to other places where seasonal "settlements" of tents and canvas huts existed pnly ... Wolfgang, This is one of those assumed things. Shetland like Norway, has a problem with the fact that Fish are Fish, and Herring Are Herring. My parents both worked for the 'Herring Board' in the late 40's, and while discussing this article with them this morning, I made the mistake of calling a Herring station, a fish curing station.. oooppsss!! after a long tirade of abuse I now know the difference.. :-)))

In the overall plan of the fishing industry category, it is my intention that the Herring industry should become a category of it's own because of it's immediate importance to the local economy. Within that category would be the Herring stations,,, Heimdal posted great maps of those already.

This is not easy to explain, but the main difference between herring and real fish is that the herring were all landed at piers/quays, whereas real fish were landed at beaches.

Tried to post this once, but failed,,, so I'll try again,,,, damned pooter is not in the land of the living :-) Yes Islandhopper, Hav Fish and Taing Fish will have to get a mention.

The way I planned the fishing category, which is a massive subject, is that there should be many pages interlinked within the overall category of the fishing industry. Within this there should be sub categories to relate the herring industry and the white fish etc.. not to forget the shell fish..

As you can see it is a big subject but if we make many pages they can be interlinked by the categories. I think a good page would be "Herring Stations" perhaps Heimdal has that info??? In fact the page "Bygone Days" could be moved to Herring stations??
