Talk:Havly Cafe
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Oddrun, have you tried the Vetviks? They should know about the Shetland-Norwegian-Friends. E-mail added to the site.
btw. Is it "Havly" or "The Havly" ... ??? 91.64.2.53 03:52, 28 May 2007 (MDT)
Thanks, ;-), but I was trying to find something on my side of the sea ;-)
We've now changed the name on this page to "Havly Cafe", that is the peoper name ;-)
CHEERS, Oddrun 04:14, 28 May 2007 (MDT)
Oooops - above was me, too ... ;-)
For the name have a look here; they have at least a private pic of Reidar along with the text and therefore I guess they checked it out ... ;-)Islandhopper 04:35, 28 May 2007 (MDT)
- We use the name that is in the Shetland Directory...Someplace else it is called "Havly Centre"..,Robbie has heard that too, it has someting to do with the Seamens Mission, the have gospel meetings and things like that..Robbie has E-mailed the chairman of that Friendship Society and asked for info....,Oddrun 04:47, 28 May 2007 (MDT)
Right and wrong ... ;-)
Reidar was the Lerwick representative of the Norwegian fishermen's mission and run the place for them. When the Lerwick branch was dissolved the couple stayed in Lerwick and is since then running the place as the cafe only ... well officially ... lots of seamen drop in anyway ... ;-) ... so far in short ... Islandhopper 05:04, 28 May 2007 (MDT)
- Well, because of all maybes and has been things, we have just essencial information on the page, to be sure there is nothing that is wrong. If the owner will put in anything himself, that'll be fine ;-), Oddrun 05:15, 28 May 2007 (MDT)
I've heard it referred to as 'The Havly Centre', I think mainly in connection with the weekly, Sunday Morning, christian service which is held there, but perhaps also with meetings for the firendship society, so we may find out more if the society replies to my mail.

The Havly is totally religious, I think it should be included, but just not in the way I wrote it. JAStewart 02:20, 29 May 2007 (MDT)
- Don't understand what you mean with "totally" religious, JAS. Me was never asked whether I'm a Christian or not before I got my soup. I could agree in that way that Astrid & Reidar kept the way the place was run before when they worked for the "Mission": Being friendly, openminded, helpful and pleasant against anyone who needs a help or asks for whatsoever - and yes, they call it Christian ... ;-) ... and yes, it's not the Lerwick branch of the hardock-cafe ... :-) Islandhopper 02:41, 29 May 2007 (MDT)
there is just loads of religious posters, wallprints, crosses etc. I think its important to put for people who are or aren't religious to know. JAStewart 03:52, 29 May 2007 (MDT)
- Well, just turn in the door if that is offending you!! I'm no religious person, but I have respect for other people's conviction. And we all have to have that on Shetlopedia, and be neutral in all questions about politics and religion.

By your logic there we shouldn't be allowed to say that Tavish is a member of the Lib Dems. JAStewart 04:34, 29 May 2007 (MDT)
- No, JAS, you missunderstood. We may well describe it as "a family-friendly, Christian establishment with a baby-changing room and a kid's corner with toys ... and still a "havly" to many seamen ..." ... according to descriptions on other websites and reports, but we should not discuss about "loads of religious posters" - as an absolute minor thing of decoration - and should not publish anything about someone's religious or political orientation at least not comment on it in a way that might be misunderstood as "Shetlopedia's opinion or judgement". Islandhopper 04:55, 29 May 2007 (MDT)
We had an edit conflict ;-), but Islandhopper said about the same as I mean. To tell what political party a man is elected for, is a neutral statement. Sorting businesses after their decorations is something else.

Alright guys, apologies. JAStewart 08:14, 29 May 2007 (MDT)
Shut?
I think the Havly is shut down just now, when we went past last week the sign in the window said shut till further notice.--Duncancumming 10:23, 15 August 2007 (MDT)
