@All: Anybody have any info on this one? Ex-isle 05:48, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

@islandhopper: further confirmation the spelling: that makes 3 'authorities' now Ex-isle 05:49, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

Can't help with this one ;-(

The second title was published was the Times, but the first has Ilfracombe as the place of issue, if that rings any bells? Ex-isle 06:22, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

I can remember a business in Ilfracombe advertising regularly in the small ads in the Shetland Times/News for authors who wished work printed/published. All done at the author's expense, of course. That's maybe 30/40 years ago.

That's interesting, generally - wonder who else might have self-published like that? And I think I may have found James C under Mouat:

The name Christie Mouat is in my mind now, Murrion. Sure I was there as a boy once. Ex-isle 11:46, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

An Eshaness crofter in his old age self-publishing his version of the Notions story via an ad in the Shetland Times is a story in itself. And it's in the same year as 'The Shetland Book',which had Lollie Graham's bio of JN in it. Wonder which one came first. Was it Lollie's brief piece that in inspired JCM to tell the whole story? Anyway, there's copy in the NLS down the road here so i can take a look. Ex-isle 11:40, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

I can confirm that this is the correct author, on seeing the name on Bayanne, I realised that I had employed one of his daughters some years ago, so I phoned her and she confirmed it as a booklet rather than a book. She will look for her copy and she is willing to allow it to be scanned if required. Maybe just the cover ?
Heimdal 13:39, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

That's grand, Hemidal. Booklet or book, it all has its place in the history of literature and it's all worth gathering. And there seem to be others title by him in the Shetland library catalogue. (BTW, it is Christie Mouat, is it, or am I confused?) Ex-isle 13:52, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

Yes, that is correct, it was his daughter Kathleen I spoke with.

I mind goin daer wi me faedir ta pick up oo, most a'been sometime aboot 1970. Me faider ay spakk aafil highly a'him. Hoop dis peerie biography is aaright wi his bairns. Wid be fine ta hae a photo o'him as weel, mebbie? Ex-isle 07:43, 15 July 2007 (MDT)

Looking at the genealogy, it appears he is Gary's great-grandfather.

Shetlopedia Gary? Weel weel - he laekie haes a coarn a'Christy's gumption, dan :) ... Ex-isle 12:44, 16 July 2007 (MDT)

I have just returned the booklet to Kathleen and showed her a print out of the Shetlopedia info. She said she could not remember her father being called Christy at home, always Jamie, so this name may have been used elsewhere. As well as being a crofter, he worked as a joiner (in Lerwick during the war years) so if he worked with several 'Jamies' this could be where the 'Christy' came in.
Heimdal 07:20, 19 July 2007 (MDT)

Myght be dat indeed, Heimdal. Bit if it's da sam man, me faider ay caa'd him 'Christy Moad'. Ex-isle 08:06, 19 July 2007 (MDT)
