Talk:John Williamson

I think that the birth and death dates need a little research.
Grave stone appears to say 1740 to 1803. most articles I've found say born around 1730.
Bayanne says 1730 to 1803.

You are right, Robbie, there is some kind of a controversial debate. Sticking to the facts we have to say,
ii) that there is no record surviving,
ii) that his commercial links with Gifford of Olaberry ended suddenly in 1796 (see Smith on Bayanne),
iii) despite that Dishington is talking in "present" in 1798 (there is - not there was),
iv) Williamson is no more mentioned in connection with the 1804 outbreak of small-pox ...
... as to the dates on the stone: Unfortunately I can't read the inscription on my own photopraph but as far as I remember from my first visit some 25 years ago the stone is not the original grave stone - it is a memorial stone and the inscription only refering to the then known facts:
a) Williamson living in the area since 1740 (see again Smith for that) and
b) the stone laid in 1803.
In fact Williamson was burried at an unknown place within the cemetery at Cross Church.
As far as possible, the details will be discussed and some footnotes will be added later ... The story will be a longer one ... ;-) Islandhopper 03:30, 24 July 2007 (MDT)
