Does anybody else think the same as me?? "This page looks like a Crock of S*it"..
Any ideas how we can make it look better??

What we mean is that the whole page shuold be done something with, now it's only a short "description" and a loooooong list....., there must be a better way to do it, just with "See also", to the businesses, and things like that..We have to start thinking ;-)Oddrun 08:48, 1 May 2007 (MDT)

I see ... some butter to the fish like

Lerwick is the chief town of the Shetland archipelago and the most northerly town in Great Britain. The town is situated on a fine natural harbour on Bressay Sound on the eastern coast of Shetland Mainland.

The town developed from a small 16th century fishing village offering port an curring fascilities to Scottish and international fishing fleets. We soon see the town rivalling Scalloway the ancient capital of Shetland on the west coast of Mainland as Shetland's political and economic centre. Lerwick took over this role as early as in the 17th century when Fort Charlotte was built to protect the town and its harbour.

to be continued ... ;-) Islandhopper 09:52, 1 May 2007 (MDT)

That's the idea. :-),,, Something like that would be a great start to the page.
I will see if I can do something with the layout of the businesses etc..

Looking Good Now..

Thanks Islandhopper for all your work, it looks really great now :-)

Red Links on this page

Wouldn't it be a good idea to clear the red links from this page before the Shetland Life is published??
The Lodberries, Islandhopper, I seem to recall you know a lot about the history of them :-)

Holmsgarth and North Ness, Under Construction ;-)

Lerwick Port Authority,, any takers?? Heimdal, do you have any history on them?? ;-)

I think, in all 4 cases, we have enough good pics already.

Robbie 22:28, 26 May 2007 (MDT)

Good idea. As to the Lodberries: I know, we had a discussion about it when I introduced the interpretation of the name from the hanseatic "Lotbeeren" ... seems to be deleted ... have to look for my booklet of Shetland tales where there is a nice story in it about the Lodberries. I will at least create something like a good stub ... ooops:what's that??? ;-) By the way: Where was the old 1869 town hall? The young R L Stevenson refers to a "water-stair beside the town hall" - what is the exact description of a "hlad berg" might be the same as the berries ... or just a second landing place ?!? ... ;-) Islandhopper 05:23, 27 May 2007 (MDT)

The original discussion you are talking about was on the Pool of Virkie page. Oddrun says that Hlad means 'to load' or 'loading', and Berg is 'rock'. You were both right then, different interpretations or uses, from different languages:-)
Old Town Hall?? Not a clue I'm afraid, I did my best to leave Lerwick out of my formative education. I wonder if Heimdal might have any ideas,, not suggesting he is old enough,, ;-))) to remember,, ;-)))
Robbie 08:13, 27 May 2007 (MDT)

This page needs a bit of attention :-)

It was started, but never quite got finished.
Any suggestion??
I was thinking that it would be a good idea to have a bit about the expansion of the town over the last few decades.
I have old pictures, from when there was very little beyond Burgh Road. And I have new ones which emphasize how much the town has grown. What I lack is the ability to add explanatory text.
Any volunteers ???? :-) :-)
I'll add some pictures to the page and that might prompt some thoughts.
Cheers,

And, if you want to play "Spot The Shetlopedian", zoom to the centre of the panorama picture at the top of the page... Oddrun has a bad habit of taking 'rear view' pictures of me. ;-) :-) :-)
