Talk:Pool of Virkie
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
There are lots of fist-sized flint stones round the Pool, not that flint occurs in Shetland, they are discarded ballast stone from the visiting trading boats, or so I was told by the late Jamie Mail.Heimdal 11:05, 17 January 2007 (GMT)
Lodberries, probably brought in by some hanseatic traders from the Baltic Sea ... ;-) Islandhopper 12:57, 17 January 2007 (GMT)
Is that where the name Lodberry comes from,??? Didn't Oddrun say something about Old Norse for landing stone or something like that??
I remember Jeemie Mail,(he was my my wifes uncle), telling me the same about ballast stones. Robbie 19:12, 17 January 2007 (GMT)
Lod from German/Germanic Lot = perpendicular, vertical, upright; berries = the stones used as ballast/dead freight to keep the boats upright ... Jeemie Mail was right ... I'm just typing a funny story about the Lerwick Lodberries and a somewhat mysterious underground passage to the town once used by the Lerwegian smugglers ... found it in an old booklet from the 1970s ... ;-) Islandhopper 22:46, 17 January 2007 (GMT)
I'm pretty sure that my definition is the right...well..,maybe it's wrong...never be too sure, I won't quarrel

I've been thinking about this Lodberries thing all day, and I think you are both right. The ballast stone is right from German, and loading stone is right from old Norse.
They both can translate as loading stone. In the German case a stone which loads or ballasts a ship, and in the Norse case a stone from which a ship is loaded.
There are many such examples in the translation between English and Shetland where the meaning falls into a grey area.
And Yes Islandhopper, I've heard about the smugglers passages. Very interesting subject.

Ofcource we both are right !!!

Too much Glasgow beer Oddrun, your spelling is getting worse. ;-)
Robbie 22:28, 18 January 2007 (GMT)
SORRY, yeah, but we both are right,,,Scottish beers or not..
Cheers again

That was me, I'm not easy to get rid of ..;-)
Cheers again

I'm sure those folks did not know what they did: Dumping lodberries into the Leirvik just to build lodberries on them ... ts ts ts ... Lerwick a suburb of Babel :-D Islandhopper 23:18, 18 January 2007 (GMT)
Babel..,that's nothing compared with old Shetland..:-)
Cheers again 217.172.33.22 23:29, 18 January 2007 (GMT)
HI, did't we agree a while ago that we all spoke the same language...we only spell it different,, and say it different ! :-), :-)

- I know, Robbie, I know ... some others of your/Oddrun's nice pics, too :-))) ... Please check the Fladdabister pic in between although I think it's OK ;-) That's the stuff I like and which brought me back to an old idea ... to produce something like "Walking the coastline of ..." (following more or less Peter Guy's bocklets ... typing this it shot to my mind that we don't have them in the book section ... :-)))) and I do have only the first two volumes in b/w)
Now that the probs with the marina map are more or less solved their might be a chance to do it over the weekend ... Islandhopper 16:34, 24 August 2007 (MDT)

Yup, I saw the Fladdabister pic, and loved it. :-)
It's almost impossible to get a pic of a voe without other things, and I think it gives more sense to a picture to have other things to give perspective anyhow. But only if it can be explained like your pics do.. :-)
So well done, Master of Maps,, and now Master of Captions :-))))))

- Sometimes I know exactly from where a shot was taken because I'm been there more than once ... sometimes it is easy to pick it up from a modern map ... sometimes not, you know ;-).
- My prob: When I show place names like Rotten Geo or Modies Geo as in the Fladdabister pic then I have no control i) wether the names are still in use, ii) if the spelling is right, iii) if there do exist other names used locally. All I can do is to check the situation with old OS maps but I do think it is worth to preserve these more or less lost names as part of local heritage ... but check ups are needed. ... And it would be a great thing to find out who was Maggie Morris ;-) I'm sure today only a few Ness folks will know about her although she lent her name to two geos ... The names and spellings are ok matched with the old OS maps. From time to time we may find better or different local names which can always be added. I should be able to check most of the south mainland ones, and hopefully others will offer suggestions for other areas.
One thing I just wondered,, wouldn't it be better if the image with the nametags on it were the image actually seen on the page, with the option to view the image without the tags, eg. the reverse of the current layout?? I think it would add a lot to the viewing pleasure by seeing the details.. :-)
We've just added a panorama pic to the Bay of Quendale which would be another great chance for adding tags to indicate the airport, Sumburgh Head, Compass Head, Pool of Virkie, Grutness Voe, etc...
I'll ask my dad about Maggie Morris. I'm sure I've heard him talk about who she was.. :-)

- A prob might be that the pics produced on a page usually are smaller than the originals (mostly thumbs) ... and therefore the text might not be readable but spoiling the view ??? Islandhopper 06:49, 25 August 2007 (MDT)
Yes good point, I hadn't really switched the braincell on when I thought of that ;-)
I'm running through the waters at the moment trying to narrow them to areas,, and at the same time seeing which ones don't have pics yet, so that I can make a wanted list for those..
I've found one with no graph, or description. "Bight of Haggrister".. I'll add the description if you can create a map when you have a chance..
