Talk:Sumburgh Airport

No airport in Lerwick ... ;-)
... that's why IATA Code LWK = Airport name: Lerwick (Tingwall Airport) ... ;-) Islandhopper 06:06, 11 April 2007 (MDT)
Technically correct, in the same way as Sumburgh Airport is LSI Lerwick (Shetland Islands).
Although Sumburgh did, in the late 70's, also use the Code SMQ.
This sort of confusion is why these budget airlines can say they will fly you to a City destination, when in fact they use a cheap crappy airfield miles from the city, and by the time you have paid the taxi fare to the city you would have been cheaper using a reputable airline instead,,,, RANT!! ;-) ;-)
.
I agree with James on this one.. Let's stick with Sumburgh and Tingwall.. Especially since those are the names on the signs on the buildings,, :-) :-)
Yeah, and thats where they're located JAStewart 06:30, 11 April 2007 (MDT)
Heimdal,
Good question.. What is the correct name of the inter-island service now,, I dont think we can call them Air SICk,, or can we ;-)....

Checked the SIC pages and the flights are operated by Directflight Ltd on behalf of SIC. All from Tingwall to Fair Isle, Out Skerries, Foula and Papa Stour. SIC own both Islander aircraft.Heimdal 10:01, 11 April 2007 (MDT)
History
I'm working on an idea for creating a little bit about the history of Sumburgh Airport. But, as usual, I am short on factual info.
Any little snippets would be very welcome. Dates most importantly.
I worked there from 77 to 81, so that period isn't too bad, it's the early stuff I am short on.
I have read 2 books/booklets my dad has on the early days but very little sank into the grey matter.

I've started to add a bit, hopefully it might eventually look like something, but once I've got what I can entered, we'll need somebody to do a bit of a re-write so that it makes sense.. :-)))
- Not sure I can add very much more to the history. There are lots of other things which could be added but I don't want to make the article too long.
There is a lot of info about WWII, but I think that deserves a page of its own, in the wartime category, linked to this one.
Any ideas for other things needing adding? Or corrections???

I added a couple of links that may be of use. The Sumburgh Airport webcam might be a useful addition as well -->
