Talk:Swan
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Should this page not be named just Swan or "Swan (1900)" to fit the terminology adopted for other boat names on Shetlopedia?

- I may be wrong but, I think that in normal conversation she is always referred to as "The Swan". Yes there are other boats named Swan, but there is only really one boat that comes to mind when the name "Swan" is mentioned.
Maybe I'm thinking from the point of view of Norwegian grammar, (an mey Da Guid Loard preserve me sowel fur spaekin aboot grammar), but I would say we should keep the definitive page name. ;-)

I have to agree with EM here, I think the page should be re-named as Swan. The use of the definite article i.e. 'the', is not allowed by the ship registration authorities. If I remember correctly (always in doubt) it should only ever be used when referring to ships of the Royal Navy. (and no, I don't fly a blue ensign ;-)) )

Certainly she is "The Swan," but so are "The Brenda," "The Clair," "The Loki," "The Arctic Mist," .... etc. It is the same for all boats/ships. Shetlopedia consistently, and correctly, lists all the others without the "The" (including the Liefde which is sometimes wrongly called "The De Liefde").
Would "Swan (1900)" not be better than Swan because you already have another Swan ship? Swan would then be a disambiguation, and "The Swan" a redirect to "Swan (1900)".
EM 14:25, 29 February 2008 (MST)
Yes, we refer to the various boats/ships as 'the whatever', but we should use the definite article in writing the name.

- OK, lets play Shetlandic Deevils Advocate.
"DA SWAN"
I'm afraid to say that this is a case where I see the identity of our most famous, present day, vessel being eroded by political correctness. GRRR!!!!

- Da Swan Or "The Swan" is as far as I can see it, is "the" flagship of Shetland, and desereves the artice "The", ,,,She is a special beauty!!!!!

This is possibly the maddest I have ever been about anything on Shetlopedia. In fact getting near to bursting a blood vessel.
OK, change the article title to just "SWAN", but only do that after you have voted for Johnathan Wills, and voted that Shetland should be a county of England.
Of course, since we are in this politically correct vein, let's change a few other pages.
Let's call Shetland the Isles of Shetland or , the Shetland Islands,
Or how about moving the Betty Mouat page to, Elizabeth Mouat.
Get Real.

- Woah! I must surely have been misundertood. Please don't burst any blood vessels. My proposal was purely about the consistency of referencing, and not at all PC related. I have no wish to erode her identity, after all the whole project was kicked into action by fedder's rallying "there will never be another Swan" letter to the Shetland Times. I don't quite see why you get such an impression. Please read again my explanation regarding why the page title doesn't follow the same referencing style as all other boats/ships on Shetlopedia, bearing in mind I'm just looking for consistency. It is also quite weird to be accused of being politically correct, that's a real novelty for me ;-)

The reason I noticed this was because I was checking the Swan page to see if it would be a suitable template to use for the Loki page. My question now is, what to name her page? Should it be Loki, "The Loki", "Maggie Helen", "Loki (Maggie Helen)", "Loki (1904)", etc. ?
EM 11:20, 1 March 2008 (MST)
- I've moved it, but I still object severely to the reduction in status of a 'real boat', which so many people fought so hard to restore as a symbol of Shetland.
And which incidentally, google analytics prove, is searched for on Google as "The Swan", not just swan.
And, EM, I think just Loki would be fine,, although as a true believer in dy fedder's convictions, that "there is only one", I would have loved to call the page "The Loki",, but that's just me being a sentimental old fart again ;-) :-)))

Page needs reconstruction
Having looked at this page. It really isn't up to scratch.
This is a vessel with over 100 years of history, and all we've got is a few lines of 'very little'
I have a few ideas of how to improve the page, but perhaps somebody with more boat knowledge could add to the main text,, please....
