Between the 9th and 12th of August 1999, Shetland found itself the centre of world media attention as 70 large sailing vessels with over 2,500 crew onboard arrived in Lerwick harbour. This number of visitors, coupled with an additional 5,200 tourists to the islands to witness the event first-hand. This resulted in Lerwick's population more than doubling overnight.
