Tammie Norie, the once wider spread Scots name for the bird, is still used in Shetland.
When young the laterally flattened heavy bill does not show the bright colours (red, blue, and yellow) of adult birds.
Tammie Nories prefer coastal and offshore waters. They breed in colonnies in rabbit or other holes mostly on cliffs but on grassy inland as well.
There are many good places to watch them in Shetland (with the biggest colonies at Hermaness, Unst and Foula) and a lot of them are easy to access. Just before leaving their summer quarters on the islands they gather in great colonies.
It is an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to intentionally disturb Puffins while they are building a nest, or are in or near a nest containing eggs or young. It is also an offence to disturb the dependant young.
