The Shetland Independent
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
The Shetland Independent Newsletter a free monthly magazine distributed to every household in Shetland, began publication in May 2007, edited by Stuart Hill. Providing a voice for Shetland, it accepted contributions from any source about Shetland issues and aimed to publish articles that might not be found in the mainstream press, either because they were too controversial, or perhaps because they were just good news!
One of the sections was called the Muckle Poll (for non-Shetlanders, muckle means big). Every issue gave the people of Shetland the chance to vote on an important question of their choice. Voting was by phone on Muckle Poll Day each month. It offered a means, according to the editor, by which a new partnership might be forged between the SIC and the electorate.
The Shetland Independent Newsletter ceased publication in December 2007.
