The Thora was built in 1975 by Thorshavnor Skipasmidja, Faroe, as the last of the five first RO-RO ferries. She is a sister of Fylga and Grima.
She arrived Shetland on the 12 of September 1975, and on the 5th of April 1976, she entered her regular service as a second vessel in the Yell Sound service. This was only a summer service until the sixth ferry, Kjella, arrived in 1980.
Her sisters Grima and Fylga were sold in 2004, and this left Thora as the last surviving of the original five.
The Thora is now, (2009), used as a stand by vessel.
