Thomas (Tom) Moncrieff was the 1965 Guizer Jarl for the Lerwick Up Helly-Aa, and represented 'Ottar the Explorer'. He was born on February 27th 1916 and died on November 12th 2005, both in Lerwick.
For many years he was the Principal Teacher of Navigation & Seamanship at The Central School/AHS, based in the Navigation rooms in King Harald Street and latterly in the then newly completed AHS extension in the late 70's. During his period in the job he was a main driving force behind the organisation of the Junior Up Helly Aa, and was the overseer of building the Junior Up Helly Aa Galley each year. Upon his retirement his Junior Up Helly Aa organisational duties were taken over by Iain Smith.
He was a keen sailor, and is widely known due to the many voyages he took, including to Norway, in the 'Loki', a former wooden hulled fishing vessel which he converted for pleasure use.
