Tombolos are spits that connect the mainland with an island.
In the Northern Isles, tombolos are also known as ayres from Old Norse : Eyrr - gravel beach.
Most of them are formed of coarser materials than sand, like gravel, cobbles or boulders.

The tombolo at St Ninian's Isle, South Shetland is the largest active sand tombolo in Britain.

The Island Fora Ness which is sheltering the entrance to Dales Voe - Delting is connected to the mainland with two ayres.

Dales Voe - Delting, North Ayre
Dales Voe - Delting, South Ayre
