Trout fishing
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
Shetland is one of the best places to go for Brown Trout fishing. There are hundreds of lochs in Shetland and the quality of the trout is excellent, averaging 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound and there are lots of them.In the past, there was also excellent Sea Trout fishing, but, due to a vast increase in sea lice, possibly due to the number of Salmon Farms, this fishery has declined greatly.
Annual permits cost £25 and short term permits for visitors are also available ( under 16's and O.A.P.'s are granted free permits )
Some of the best flys are the traditionals. Pennels, Green Peters, Teal blue and silver, Hedgehogs and Muddlers all work well in the lochs.
Spinning is allowed, except in the Spiggie Loch and the Loch of Benston.
