The Bells Brae collection of Jarl's Squad Shields.
These are on display in the Lerwick Galley Shed during the summer months as part of the Up Helly Aa Summer Exhibition. They remain in the shed through the autumn and winter, before returning to Bells Brae Primary School in time for Up Helly Aa. The collection was first assembled by Thomas Moncrieff in 1964-1965 for the opening of Bells Brae Hall. In subsequent years it became an established procedure for the current Jarl's squad to make an extra shield, which is presented during their visitation to the school. Missing earlier shields were obtained to fill out the collection, as well as the construction of three replicas (1928, 1934 and 1935). It should be noted that the three replicas, although constructed in collaboration with original squad members, are not entirely accurate, as can now be seen from old photos. The 1949 shield, although original, appears to have been inaccurately repainted. Some shields are also on display at the Clickimin Leisure Centre, Islesburgh Community Centre and Sound Primary School.
From its establishment in 1956 through to 1965 the shields carried by the Junior Jarl's Squad were, like their suits, re-used senior Jarl's Squad suits from previous festivals. From 1965, when organiser Thomas Moncrieff was senior Jarl, the junior Jarl's Squad used the same shield design each year, namely the 1965 senior Jarl's squad design. This continued until 1979. Examples of the squad shields are on display at the Sound and Bell's Brae Primary Schools in Lerwick. All shield photos by Kozetland1.
