Thanks Jeannie - i have some of yours but you can never have too many - i'll be in touch
--Kozetland1 04:38, 11 June 2010 (MDT)

We have no real picture of the SMUA Shield !!! ;-), cant find any in yor blog either .....
Cheers, --Oddrun 10:04, 25 June 2010 (MDT)

I was preparing some - & also some of the Squad dress detail - but I will probably get some more tomorrow & pick the best. Should we be consistent with the hyphenation (or not) of Up Helly Aa? --Kozetland1 12:18, 25 June 2010 (MDT)

The hyphenation, (what a word !! I guess that's the "-"), has been discussed before....nothing came out of it ;-)...if you search, it dos not matter if is there or not....personally I would be happy to use just "Up Helly Aa"...even Lerwick has it that way on their website ;-).....
It is a major job to fix it,,,but not worse than a lot of other things I've fixed afore ......So I guess that that's my next project, if no one is totally against it !
You have done a fantastic job with the UHAs, I'm very happy for that ;-), I just have to mention shields, and there they are ;-)
Cheers, --Oddrun 14:23, 25 June 2010 (MDT)
I for one would be delighted to see that hyphen disappear. It's something which has bugged me for about 2 years now, because as far as I'm concerned the hyphen was a mistake from the start.
It's a major edit to get rid of it, but I would be delighted to help get rid of it. It can't be more that about 500 edits, and me and Oddie have done that in a day many times before now. ;-)
So can I assume we get this damned problem sorted??? I might even get interested in doing more work on the site if we can agree to fix balls-ups like that one. ;-) LOL
Damn, forgot to sign, I was so excited at the chance of getting rid of that cock-up
LOL

Got int' Himell - i nearly fell of my chair reading that. Youre a diamond - Hyphenation my Ar**.
On a more serious note I should get all the Delting shields tomorrow as they are apparently all in the galley shed. There are also some others in the pipeline.
--Kozetland1 15:55, 25 June 2010 (MDT)

I'll deal with the "hypheting" ;-)))))
The shields sounds good...we have the most fantastic collection now...that's why I found out that we needed a gallery of them ;-)
PS: Next time you pass the Cunningsburgh School, can you take a pic of the whole building, saw your blog, (will add the mural), went to the C.Sch. page, and realised we had no pic of it.....embarassing !!!
Cheers, --Oddrun 16:12, 25 June 2010 (MDT)

I've uploaded a pic of the 1985 Hamefarin Galley head 'Krossuden'. The galley was built by the Lerwick Galley Boys and Torch Boys for the May 1985 event and is now in the Lerwick Galley Shed. However, I'm not sure where to put it - so i'll leave it up to you.

Bonnie pic, I'll find a place for it......
I have so many pics to chose among for the 2010....I don't know where to start ;-)
My plan is to put in some more info on each year, and move them to separate pages...I'll get there sometime...If you have any info, come with it ;-)
Cheers, --Oddrun 12:37, 30 June 2010 (MDT)
The 1985 galley head was, like 2010, made by Ex-Jarl Roy Leask. Her name was actually Kross Sudin which I guess is Norsky for Southern Cross, and presumably a nod to the antipodean Hamefarers. I've uploaded a pic of the nameplate, which has mucked up the layout as usual I'm afraid. It is quite unlike Andrew Tait's masterpieces from this year (the best bit of the galley in my opinion), but is of course from a different school (fedder made them).
EM 15:40, 30 June 2010 (MDT)
Thats interesting EM - the caption nailed to the head in the galley shed needs updating (i photographed [almost] everything). btw - the galley head pic was taken yesterday - I just removed the background.

Ha ha! As you've already noted with the various versions of the term UHA itself, spelling tends to be somewhat flexible in UHA.
EM 16:50, 30 June 2010 (MDT)
I have indeed :-))

I propose the folowing standardisation (starting sooth & heading nort):
SMUHA - South Mainland Up Helly Aa
SFF - Scalloway Fire Festival (or SUHA if you prefer)
LUHA - Lerwick Up Helly Aa
BUHA - Bressay Up Helly Aa
NAGUHA - Nesting & Girlsta Up Helly Aa
DUHA - Delting Up Helly Aa
NMUHA - Northmavine Up Helly Aa
CUHA - Cullivoe Up Helly Aa
UUHA - Uyeasound Up Helly Aa
NUHA - Norwick Up Helly Aa

--Kozetland1 17:25, 30 June 2010 (MDT)

Spellings can be cofusing....as for the name of this boat, I would have spelled it Kross Suden, or better Korssuden...(Kross is Nynorsk;-)), the meaning of it is Cross, you are right there EM), (Håkon Håkonson had a ship with that name), but "sudin" can also be correct....confused ??
The word "Sud", or "súð" as it was spelled in old Norse, is one of many words that really means boat or ship...we have several others with names that ends with suden - Mariasuden, Kristsuden Olavssuden..etc....The word goes back to the time when the boats were sewn together...the originally meaning is seam...
This was the Old Norse lesson for today ;-))
Cheers, --Oddrun 22:48, 30 June 2010 (MDT)

Interesting. So maybe my "south" guess is completely wonky. As for the sewing, I'm a big fan of such boat building approaches. Indeed the original intention was to sew all the SMUHA galley planks together using monofilament. We ultimately only stitched her bow and stern regions, as screws were faster.

EM 04:59, 1 July 2010 (MDT)
South is "Suðr" - the old Norse name for the Hebrides was "Suðreyar" ....The name of the Galley can maybe be translated to something like "The Crusader"...that can fit, the Hamefarers were returning to the "Holy" land ;-)
Cheers, --Oddrun 05:13, 1 July 2010 (MDT)

Gah - I was sure I capitalised the title 'MossBank Up Helly Aa' - but it doesnt show as that - please edit.
--Kozetland1 14:24, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

I got a bit confused there until I saw that James had already made the change. I was wondering why you wanted 'MossBank Up Helly Aa' rather than 'Mossbank Up Helly Aa' :-). Not many left now, just the Lerwick Junior and the Waas Brownie events I think.
EM 14:58, 7 July 2010 (MDT)
Maybe we will be finished with this year before Christmas ;-))))
Cheers, --Oddrun 15:04, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

The Junior LUHA is most definitely yours EM ;-)
Not too sure about the Waas Brownie Event although Malcolm Younger did feature this years in iiShetland I believe.
Thanks for the page title edit James.
--Kozetland1 15:22, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

Have you seen my talk on the 2005 DUHA billhead ????
Cheers, --Oddrun 15:29, 7 July 2010 (MDT)
Thats interesting - the pic from the Programme is completely different to the billhead in the galley shed. I'll try & find out what thats all about.

--Kozetland1 15:39, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

No its not - you need to crop off the 2005 caption at the bottom of the pic from the galley shed - thats not part of the 2004 billhead :-))

--Kozetland1 15:42, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

I see it now.......It SAYS 2004 0n the pic.....I'll try fix that in a peerie start ;-)
Thanks for helping me out of the confusion ;-)
Cheers, --Oddrun 15:56, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

I see on the 'Puffin' page a link to the Puffin info on the Nature in Shetland website. I created that page so feel free to take any/all of the information there onto the Shetlopedia page if you wish.

Similarly - feel free to take anything from the 'braer.net' website for the Shetlopedia pages. In fact if you want to move the website to Shetlopedia thats fine :-))
--Kozetland1 17:24, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

That sounds REALLY GOOD ! Thank you ! I Shall have a closer look into it, but not tonight ;-)....I'm an hour ahead of you.....>br>Cheers, --Oddrun 17:32, 7 July 2010 (MDT)

AHA !! I just had a bright idea ;.)))))...had a quick look at your Puffin page,,,and realized that you might know someting about birds too..(love your white puffin)...The bird category is a disaster...there is only 13 birds in it.....so maybe, nearer Christmas, when we are finished with this year's UHAs....you might have time to look into that category too............It really needs some improvement....
PS: Do you know anyone who know something about flowers....;-), that's a bad category too ;-)))))

Photographic Help Required :)

Hi Kev,
Gary has received a request for a high resolution copy of this image:
Law Ting Holm Shetlopedia.com Shetland.JPG
But I can no longer find this photo in my files so I thought that possibly you could obtain a better image, on a brighter day.
If you can help let me know and I'll give you the email address of the guy at Harvard who's looking for it so that you can contact him directly..
Cheers,
Robbie 15:27, 24 August 2011 (MDT)

Thats no problem Robbie - I can easily take a new pic of that. If the weathers half-reasonable I can probably do it tomorrow - although it was thick fog with rain most of today!! Cheers
--Kozetland1 17:08, 24 August 2011 (MDT)

Law ting holm aug 2011.jpg
Looks a little different to your pic Robbie - the loch level is much reduced - more like Law Ting Peninsula. Larger pic available if required.
--Kozetland1 04:45, 28 August 2011 (MDT)

Thanks Kev.
I didn't think the weather had been that dry this year. LOL
I've emailed a link to that picture to the guy at Harvard. If he wants a high res image I'll let you know.
Maybe you can keep that image in mind when there has been a lot of rain (eg. sometime in the next few weeks).
Thanks for your help
