Uyeasound (Now Vementry) with the Isle of Vementry beyond
Uyeasound, more commonly known as Vementry is a small settlement on the West Mainland, approx 24 miles from Lerwick and 3.5 miles North of Aith.
It is unknown how the settlement became known as Vementry but it is likely that it was after Vementry House was built in the early 1900s.
Uyeasound is seperated from the island of Vementry, which lies just to the northwest, by a narrow channel, with Uyea Sound to the north and Cribba Sound to the south.
An ancient Chapel and burial ground is thought to have once existed here, see the book, The Medieval Churches and Chapels of Shetland, R.G Cant 1976
