Picture from a George Washington Wilson post card from about 1900. Note the herring barrels stacked on the right, and what is possibly a herring boat's mast on the bogies on the rail track. There is someone up a ladder against the building far left.
Uyeasound, is a small settlement on the south coast of the island of Unst. It lies on the north shore of a bay called Uyea Sound, from which its name is derived.
One of the most notable buildings in the village is Greenwell's Booth, a Hanseatic trading booth dating from about 1646.
To the east of Uyeasound, across the ayre which separates Easter Loch from Uyea Sound, is Uyeasound Primary School and the settlement of Clivocast. Further east on the same road lies Muness Castle.
In April 2009 a new 100 metre long pier, which cost £3.3M, was officially opened.
The pier and buildings shown in the other pictures can be seen at the centre of the far shore of Uyea Sound. |
