Ve Skerries, as seen from Eshaness Lighthouse, with zoom lens.
Ve Skerries, ( Old Norse : Vestan sker = West Skerries ), are a group of low skerries 3 miles north west of Papa Stour, on the west coast of Shetland.
The individual skerries are; North Skerry, Ormal, The Clubb, Reaverack, and Helligobolo.
Many ships have been wrecked on the skerries, the best known are the tragic wreck of the Ben Doran in 1930, and the Elinor Viking, which had a happier outcome in 1977 with all crew members being saved. This last incident prompted the building of a lighthouse. Ve Skerries Lighthouse was built in 1979
Previously the Jane was wrecked on the skerries in early 1850, the Turqouise on October 2nd 1872, the Nor on 1st January 1892, and the Illeri on May 5th 1909.
