Virkie Marina
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
The Virkie Marina, part of the Ness Boating Club's facilities is at the east end of the Pool of Virkie, alongside Sumburgh Airport, at the south end of the Shetland Mainland.. It was constructed in the mid 80's by dredging an area known as the "Selkie Stanes".
Prior to that a pier and launching ramp had been built in the late 70's, as well as the club building which was opened in 1983.
A major driving force behind the creation of these facilities were the Harper brothers, Jim and Tammie. The marina is dedicated to them on a plaque fixed to a standing stone at the breakwater.
The entrance to the Pool of Virkie was very exposed to southeasterly gales, but the completion of the airport runway extension in 2006 has given the marina some extra protection.
