Widows Homes, from an old postcard.

The Widows Homes, originally called Widows' Asylum,(Proper Name from 1971 :Anderson Homes), at Twageos Road, Lerwick, were opened in 1865.
As a home for widows of fishermen, sailors and others it was funded, in memory of his wife, by Arthur Anderson, a native of Lerwick, and co-founder of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O).
The plaque on the wall of the homes states: "I was a stranger and ye took me in".
In 1971 the home was taken over by Lerwick Town Council, refurbished and renamed Anderson Homes. It still fulfills it's original function.
