William J Tulloch

William John Tulloch 1870-1940, Shetland dialect poet and author, was born in Tresta, Fetlar on the 4th of November, 1870. He was the oldest son of William John Tulloch (b. 28.7.1841) from Gremister, North Yell, who had moved to Fetlar and married a local woman, Tamar Gardner (b. Hamar, Fetlar, 22.11.1835). Tulloch snr. worked as a merchant, a trade which his literary son followed.

Much of Tulloch's early work was published in various journals under the pseudonym 'A.N.O.F.' (A Native Of Fetlar). His best known collection is Lights and Shades: poems and sketches, published in 1933 by T and J Manson. He died in Lerwick on the 7th of February, 1940.
