- Arthur Anderson formed the Union Steam Colliery Company in 1853, with himself as chairman and principal share-holder. The company was later renamed The Union Steam Ship Company.

- An unidentified fishing vessel capsized or foundered off No Ness Head, at a position approx 3 miles S of Mousa. Three people perished.
- 4th
Le Jeune Alphonse, a sail fishing lugger laden with a cargo of salt, of and from Dunkirk, France, for Iceland wrecked on Mousa during SE Force 9 wind and thick fog. All of the crew were saved.

A board, believed to be the nameboard of a vessel, bearing the wording Sophia Moffatt recovered from the sea 'off Fladdabister'. No other information corcerning the vessel to which this name or part name belonged is known. This is presumed to be the date of reporting, rather than the date of discovery.

The Queen, of Peterhead, Scotland is recorded as having wrecked "near Shetland".
