The Demerara, a full rigged ship, registered in Greenock, Scotland. This vessel is persumed to have wrecked or foundered at an unidentified position on or near the north west of Shetland, possibly near Melby, Sandness in late April 1870.
Between April 27th and mid May there were numerous reports of wreckage identified as being parts of this vessel, along with cargo items such as timber, casks of palm oil etc, being washed ashore at locations from Melby, Sandness southwards through various location in Orkney, along the NW coast of the Scottish mainland and the Isle of Lewis.
