John William 'Jack' Priest, for so long synonymous with Reawick Farm, was born on the 29th of October 1930 in Lerwick. His father was an Unst man, a shepherd to trade, and his mother came from Ollaberry.

In September 1939, Jack was sent to stay with his grandparents on the island of Uyea, where they were employed by Sir Basil Neven-Spence, and it is this period of his life that forms the basis of his engaging memoir, Island at War, published in 1994, the year of Jack's death.
