Park Lane starts between 137, (formerly The Shetland Fudge Company) and 141, (S & R Swanson), Commercial Street.
Above the first steep steps it widens out to a tiny square, before it turns a bit southward, and then westward again, until it ends at a north - south lane which connects Reform Lane with Pitt Lane, halfway up to Hillhead.
The lane was re-named Park Lane in 1845 by the Commissioners of Police as part of their exercise to officially name and number all of the streets, lanes and houses in the Burgh of Lerwick, previously it was known as Robert Cheyne's Closs, after a one time resident of the lane.
Looking down from the top of Park Lane, the top of the tower on the Grand Hotel can be seen on the left side. Photo from Shetland Museum and Archives. |
