The 1881 OS Map shows St Ola's Church as being in a ruined condition, and situated, along with an adjacent burial ground, just a little distance back from the west coast of Aith Voe, Bressay and a similar distance south of the settlement of Gunnista.
It was the parish church of Bressay until the 1720s, when a new church was built on the west side of the island, probably on or close to the site of the present-day church at Mail. St Ola's was demolished, and the 18th century mausoleum of the Hendersons of Gardie was built on the site.
